Volunteer bus drivers Viv Willson and Val Lockett have finished their run after more than 20 years at the wheel.
The passenger services to Parndana and Penneshaw provided by the Cook Centre have now been given to a private contractor, KI Transfers.
The ladies are a bit miffed they received only very short notice that they were no longer required.
The service had been more than a town-to-town transport option, providing a social occasion for the passengers as well as the drivers, who accommodated side trips to the cemetery, medical clinic and wherever else the passengers need to go.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever been sacked,” Ms Willson said, only half-joking.
Kangaroo Island Health Service chief Donna Cowan acknowledged the hard work, dedication and commitment the volunteer drivers had provided over many years.
“Unfortunately, as a result of a recent spate of bus incidents, including the recent non-roadworthy status of the bus, the Health Service - following a tender-based process - has found an alternative transport service to support the Island’s transport disadvantaged community clients,” Ms Cowan said.
“We will be working with the volunteer drivers to ensure they remain valuable volunteers within the organisation as these non-paid staff have many assets to share,” Ms Cowan said.
Staff from the Cook Centre meet regularly with the Kangaroo Island Council and there was the possibility of further co-operation with the newly appointed Community Passenger Network co-ordinator at the council.
