More than 300 trees planted

3/07/2008 2:42:00 PM
Local residents, along with a community Christian group, recently banded together to help ensure a green future for the Reeves Point area by planting over 300 trees.

Volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Advance Kingscote, KI Natural Resource Management staff and local residents all got their hands dirty as part of a Tree Planting Day. More than 30 volunteers planted trees at the Flagstaff Lookout Reserve at the weekend.

Advance Kingscote generously provided hot drinks and food on the day. Many of the trees planted on the day were grown in the NRM’s seedbank nursery, and all species are local to the area. Volunteer Jason Mattock said that planting trees helps tackle one of our most serious environmental problems. “Planting trees can help stop global warming, with one single tree capable of absorbing one tonne of carbon dioxide over its lifetime”.

Church president Shaun Hinves, who organised the church volunteers, said planting native trees was a great way for the church to be involved and “it’s a great opportunity for people to do something practical about the environment”. Beth Davis, of Advance Kingscote, said this park would “provide an area for all the community to enjoy, with walking trails, native flora and a lookout, with views over the Bay of Shoals”.

She thanked the Kangaroo Island Council for support with tools and manpower.
