Men’s Open

On Sunday September 21, in perfect conditions, a quality field of 35 players lined up for the Penneshaw Open.

In the absence of Barry Wheaton, Kangaroo Island’s answer to Tiger Woods, the title was up for grabs.

The beautiful course was in immaculate condition and it was no surprise to see some excellent scores.

Victory went to Penneshaw Captain Keith Roberts who played outstanding golf to card 70, just one shot outside his own course record.

Runner up was flamboyant B grader, Rob Coleman with 71. Maybe the Handicapper will finally catch up with the big fella!

Rob’s score was helped by a magnificent Eagle on the sixth which was matched by Simon Murray’s on the seventh.

Greg Church and Des Gray both had 72s with Des’s golf improving dramatically when he rid himself of the baggage which impeded his performance in the previous day’s mixed Pinehurst.

B Grade winner was Penneshaw stalwart Trevor Griffith with a hard fought 75 to defeat Runner Up Brian O’Shaughnessey.

Also in B Grade Specks Collins attempted a mighty drive to win the Long Drive. He certainly hit it a long way but unfortunately it disappeared down the middle of The Lane.

Not one to be discouraged he tried again with the same result, before finally hitting a ball on to the actual golf course!

C Grade was won by the eccentric Duane Pring who has apparently modelled his approach to golf on that of the great John Daley. His stamina over the course of 18 holes is quite astonishing!

C Grade runner up was Greg Miller.

The veterans was won by John Jenkins.

The Penneshaw Golf Club would like to thank our wonderful sponsors: Sealink, Carey Contracting, Carey Supplies, Dudley Wines, McIlroy Auto Group, KI Seafront Resort, Hog Bay Stores, Penneshaw Hotel and Aurora Ozone Hotel.

Kingscote Ladies 11/9/008

Only 12 players out to tackle a par competition but with some great scores being recorded.

Division 1 winner - Jenny Clifford with eight up.

Runner up - Heather Gray with seven up.

Now you would have to think seven up was unbeatable but no Jenny had to come in one better!

Division 2 winner - Ashley Blucher four up

Runner up - Leanne Parker all square, hits the ball a long long way but she is a bit of a tree hugger, just another one to add to the other 200 or more we already have, behind them, into them, up them, not fussed just can’t stay away.

Jenny Clifford was nearest the pin on six and 14. (she was really on fire). Judy Bell chipped in on number two (for a birdie), also 12. Other birdies - Heather Gray on 16 and Joy Florance on 17.

Jenny broke from 19 to 18 and Heather 17 to 16.

And Judy won the wheel, smarty pants!!

Kingscote Ladies 18/9/08

Fourteen ladies were out for a stroke round and the final of the Silver Spoon.

It was a pleasure to play on such a lovely day and the course in such beautiful condition - thank you all members who have worked on it.

Leanne Parker and Judy Bell were the finalists in the Silver Spoon.

After a very close round Leanne was the winner. Congratulations Leanne and well done Judy for getting there.

Jenny Clifford won Div 1 with net 69, and Eileen Uren, net 70, was runner-up. In Div 2 Ashley Blucher, net 69, won and Leanne was runner-up with net 72.

Nearest the pin was Heather Gray on 3 and Eileen on 17.

Chip-ins were Ann Turbill, 17, Joy FLorance, 11, and Heather on 12.

Judy and Marilyn got birdies. Ann had the least putts - 14. Ashley won the wheel.

Next week we are playing Bisque Par for fun as it is our last Thursday before the annual meeting on Thursday October 2 and then the summer season.
