Dudley United seals the triple deal

A grade

Dudley United 47 d Kingscote 29

The nervous A Graders took several minutes to settle and score as underdog Kingscote went out strongly against their more-fancied opponents.

With illness having side-lined Kingscote goalie Carla Smith, Caitlin Berry took the court, using her size and strength to win possession and many rebounds, benefiting from the great feeding of Tash Ingerson and Katrina Lovering and proving a handful for association MVP in goal keeper Eloise Wheaton.

Carly Johnston and Morgan O’Brien provided plenty of defensive trouble for Dudley goalies Julie Helyar and Hollie Buick.

Rachael Litster’s height and reach in centre caused a few upsets for the Kingscote attack early on.

Dudley taking a three-goal lead into quarter-time but Kingscote goalies settling and clawing within one goal during the second quarter.

Dudley muscled back, taking the lead to a game-high seven goals at half-time.

Dudley looked like running away with the game in the third quarter and was out to a 13-goal lead early in the quarter.

Undeterred, the Kingscote squad fought back, finishing the quarter strongly to leave only a six-goal deficit at the last break and real hope of an upset in the wind.

Philippa Berden made good space in the WA position, combining with Deb Mossop to bring calm and a sense of purpose to the Kingscote attack.

In the end, Dudley’s firepower was too strong with Helyar and Buick hardly missing a shot. Final score not reflecting how tightly the game was contested.

B Grade

Parndana 52 d

Dudley United 36

Underdog Dudley started strong, Stacey Dezen and Amy Sulkowski keeping Ange Horjus quiet in the first few minutes. Unforced errors cost Dudley, which continued to stay in touch, letting Parndana creep to a four-goal lead by quarter time.

A youthful defence line for Parndana brought new enthusiasm in the second quarter with Rachael Pratt and Eliza Congdon agile and quick in the goal area. In a goal for goal quarter, Parndana produced some uncharacteristic unforced passing errors and the gap remained at four goals at half-time despite Parndana pushing out to a seven-goal lead in the later stages. Ange Horjus missing a shot right on the bell, proving she too is human!

Dudley’s turn for personnel changes with Andrea Buick and Kaila Kirby on and Jilli Porter-Baines and Tamra Howard taking a well-earned rest.

Parndana’s goalies - Horjus and Kate Murray - settled into their stride this quarter, reading and feeding well off each other as they have done all season.

Dudley stayed in touch, earning their few opportunities but not always able to convert, the lead pushing out to eight in favour of the Red Girls.

A weary Dudley contingent continued to push hard in the last quarter but Parndana was just too strong all over the court with Suzi Watters and Bec Bennet dynamic through the centre.

C Grade

Dudley United 46 d

Wisanger1 25

Dudley started strong scoring three unanswered goals. They held this lead for the first half with the warm conditions not slowing things down. Good shooting by Wisanger’s Claire and Skye. Dudley’s defence playing hard and picking up all loose balls. Half time saw Dudley step things up and take over the centre third, with great passing into the tall goalies who didn’t miss. Dudley’s attack led them to a great victory.

Good to see the Trethewey sisters finally playing nicely together (it’s taken 30 years!).

D Grade

Parndana 38 d Kingscote 24

A few nervous mis throws happened before both teams settled down to tight defence work and slow goal scoring giving Parndana a three point lead at quarter time. Janet Wickham (K) and Melanie Kelly (P) were both fighting hard for that ball. Second quarter was again tightly contested and although Parndana still had a slight lead, the game could go either way.

After half time Kingscote made some changes – Iris from goalie to defence and Janet to centre, then Caitlin into goals. Unfortunately this seemed to unsettle the team. Parndana put Kristen Platten on for fresh legs and along with Vanessa and Shirley working very hard in defence, they extended their lead to seven by three quarter time.

Parndana started the final quarter a bit wobbly with no goals in the first five minutes. Kingscote were looking threatening. However, Parndana settled into their game and comfortably extended their lead and won by 15 goals.

A game played in good spirits, well contested by both teams and great spectator netball.

15&Under

Kingscote 43 d Wisanger 30

A great display of netball by the top two teams. Kingscote got off to a good start in the first quarter, leading by 10 goals. Wisanger made some changes and came out fighting to come within three goals at half time. Half time saw the girls find some shade and lots of water to battle it out in the second half. The game was there for the taking by either team. Both teams were pulled up frequently and consistently for stepping throughout the game. The second half was no time for too many mistakes!! Third quarter was still quite even, Kingscote starting to take control and making more of their opportunities. Final quarter Kingscote pulled away and won by 13 goals. Great game played by all.

13&Under

Dudley United 46 d Kingscote 31

Dudley started strongly with Maddie Lierich not missing any goals, helping to dispel any nerves. Anna Florance and Jade Stevens attacking well and feeding the Dudley Goalies.

Kingscote started Tayla Lovering in GA and she attacked well but Ricky Lee Barrios made it extremely difficult for her. Jazmin Lierich rebounding any missed shots. Dudley United up by five at quarter time.

Ella Johnson improved her play in the second quarter as Annie Johnson had held her in the first quarter but Ella used her height advantage in rebounding strongly and putting in the goals.

Eliza Sheridan was steady through the centre and combined well with Zoe Sheridan although DU’s Chloe Montgomerie’s long arms made passing difficult and defenders picking up a few intercepts and converting goals to be up by 12 goals at half time.

DU brought on three new midcourters at half time with fresh legs in the heat. Sariah Hinves and Lucy Kempster in centre were both speedy around the court setting up for their teams. Kingscote changed Tayla Lovering back to defence and her tightness created more pressure and Michaela Williams lifted making some great intercepts. Kingscote caught back a few goals through Nychia’s accurate shooting. DU steadying with Shai Helyar too fast for Jade Hinton who tried hard. Maddie Maguire got a few intercepts for DU as did Tayla in the last quarter but DU too strong on the day after some great tussles all year.

11&Under

Western Districts 31 d Dudley United 29

Great start to the match with Dudley coming out strongly with Charlotte Gilfillan and Caitlin Florance playing a great standard of netball. Aleeysha Douglas-Hill taking some great intercepts in defence for Western Districts.

Great second quarter with it being goal for goal all girls settling down. Georgia Weatherspoon taking some great intercepts for WD and Ruby Gurney applying great pressure in Dudley’s defence. Another even quarter with both sides playing well in the heat. Raia Spark shooting well and Ruby Johnson backing up and moving the ball down the court well for Dudley.

Charlotte Billett shooting some fantastic goals and Hannah Douglas-Hill also backing up and trying hard for Westies. Tash Willson playing a great game at WA for Dudley. Chloe Turner having a good tussle against Belinda Zeman. Great last quarter with both sides playing an excellent game. A great game to watch with all girls showing great sportsmanship beyond their years. Western Districts getting a run on with the goals and winner by two goals.
